How product design can change the world | Christiaan Maats | TEDxUniversityofGroningen
Christiaan Maats is a designer and entrepreneur who challenges the way we look at product design. Going beyond form and function he shows us how products carry deeper layers of meaning and how those layers can connect us to a bigger reality. In this Talk, Christiaan Maats explains how meaningful products can embody the change we want to see in the world and sheds light on his own vision of a circular society that integrates industrial society with its natural roots. Christiaan Maats was born and raised in Groningen, though he studied Industrial Design Engineering at Technical University in Delft. His keen interest in the psychology behind product- and brand experience took him to Sydney, Australia where he conducted a case study titled “Storytelling through Product Design”. Good product design is good storytelling, according to Christiaan. His creation of the world’s first biodegradable shoes that bloom is a perfect example of his philosophy. Christiaan considers himself a practical idealist. He is driven by his passion for innovation and creating products and brands that inspire a better future by making you smile, think and wonder. His refreshing ideas on sustainable innovation disrupt the status quo. Christiaan's diverse background and enthusiasm are great ingredients for an inspiring TEDx Talk that focuses on the society of the future and how to get there. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at http://ted.com/tedx

This is a video that myself and 5 other classmates made during our final year as ID students at Arizona State University. Please note that we absolutely endorse the views and opinions expressed in this video (as comical as they may be, they are all very true). A day in the life of a UX Designer in San Francisco (but forreal)
About a year ago I made a video about the day in the life as a Product/UX Designer and looking back on it… I just don't think it was that useful. So, I decided to remake that video but hopefully with more answers to the question than fluff. I hope you enjoy it! ••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• LET'S CONNECT Patreon: http://patreon.com/helloimalexa Schedule a 1:1 coaching session with me and more! Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/hello_imalexa/ All the things: https://www.alexaleighh.com I design technology in order to maximize human potential. Practice happy, practice often! xo Alexa ••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• ABOUT VIDEO A typical day in the life of a Product Designer is really different each day so it's hard to put everything that goes on into one video. Regardless, here's a quick list of things that I cover in the video. 1. Flexible Schedules: Sometimes I get into work a bit later because I take morning meetings from home. 2. Mornings: The mornings are often reserved for clearing emails, providing answers to questions from the day before about projects (my company is international so when I'm asleep some of my colleagues are working), as well as working on different types of design documentation. 3. Meetings: The more you grow into a leadership role on your team, the more meetings you may start to have. This is great though, because you want to make sure the design team is represented when important decisions are made. Also, no meeting-type days are common in tech jobs. I love this idea. I get a lot more heads down design work done during these days. My design team sometimes runs design jams on these days too. 4. Collaboration: I work very closely with my Product Management and Engineering teams. We all have important and different perspectives on the projects we work on together. Feedback happens very often, both in scheduled meetings and in casual conversation. 5. Variety: Product Designers are very customer focused, so we are often working with researchers to get our designs in front of customers. Part of my job is facilitating those sessions, creating documentation on what we learned, communicated it, and using the research to inform design decisions. This creates a lot of variety to my days since we are often in different stages of the design process across different projects. ••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• PARTNERSHIPS I'm so excited to be partnering with Springboard for their Fall UX Career track! Sustainable Design: Life-Cycle Thinking
Sustainable Design involves a systems approach and consideration of the entire life-cycle of the innovation. There are three critical phases in the life-cycle of an invention where environmental impact should be considered: Supply Chain (sourcing, manufacture, and distribution), Product Use, and End-of-Life. This video explains this life-cycle approach to sustainable design and shows how three ventures applied these principles in their business model and product design.

Designing the rest of your life | Dave Evans | TEDxSanFranciscoSalon
How can design can help us create a life that is both meaningful and fulfilling, regardless of who or where we are, what we do or have done for a living, or how young or old we are. DAVE is adjunct Lecturer, product design program director at Stanford and co-founder of Electronic Arts. From saving the seals to solving the energy crisis, from imagining the first computer mice to redefining software — Dave’s been on a mission, including helping others to find theirs. Starting at Stanford with dreams of following Jacques Cousteau as a marine biologist, Dave shifted to mechanical engineering with an eye on the energy problem. So while en route to biomedical engineering, Dave accepted an invitation to work for Apple, where he led product marketing for the mouse team and introduced laser printing to the masses. When Dave’s boss at Apple left to start Electronic Arts, Dave joined as the company’s first VP of Talent, dedicated to making “software worthy of the minds that use it.” Dave holds a BS and MS in Mechanical Engineering from Stanford and a graduate diploma in Contemplative Spirituality from San Francisco Theological Seminary. Life-Cycle Design
See the full course: https://systemsacademy.io/courses/complex-systems-design/ Twitter: http://bit.ly/2HobMld In this section we discuss the process of evolution as a key dynamic within complex engineered systems and central to the design of sustainable technologies as they manage to internalise change and stay evolving over time. Complex systems are inherently dynamic systems meaning they are continuously changing over time, biological systems are a good example of this, the only time they are not engaged in some process of development is when they cease to exist. This is in strong contrast to linear systems that inherently gravitate towards some equilibrium state where they will remain static unless perturbed by some external force. Linear systems theory is the back bone to modern science and engineering that has created our industrial economies, within this paradigm technologies are designed to operate at some kind of normal static equilibrium, within a well known and predefined environment. Their life cycle is a linear one where the system is created, put into its operating environment where it is designed to function within some normal set of parameters, at a stable and static equilibrium. It is, importantly, designed to resist change and to maintain operations within these parameters for as long as possible, before being disposed of. This model works well for simple linear systems like bridges where when we clamp our girders together we want our bolts to stay there, we don’t want them to answer back, to change or grow in anyway. But in complex systems we are not dealing with bolts, we are dealing with components that have some degree of autonomy and capacity for adaptation, people, businesses, stock prices, web applications, smart phones, these thing have their own internal logic through which they adapt to changes within their local environment. Sometimes this logic is very simple, such as some financial algorithm that will automatically sell or buy a stock at a certain price, or sometime it is very complex such as why a person buys a particular item of fashion over another. The net result though is that the system can change and is not determined to follow a linear life cycle from cradle to grave, it can learn, grow and adapt in response to internal and external condition in order to renew itself, that is to become more or less sustainable and thus alter its life cycle. That is all quite abstract so lets take some examples. Most businesses don’t last very long, less than a few decades, there are many reasons why this might be, but one model to capture the underline dynamics of how a business evolves is call the explore and exploit algorithm. In it’s early years a business may explore many different product or services, being able to pivot, remain flexible and diversified, but as the business developed there will be a few product that prove most lucrative and the business may likely scale them up becoming centred around them and developing a more formal structured management system as they leverage economics of scale. The result of exploiting a few lucrative products will be that the company will become more profitable but it has also self organised into a more critical state, some small change in the market that moves against the business’s core product might destroy the enterprise. Now lets take an example of a business that has designed an alternative course of development for itself. Google has since inception generated over 90% of its revenue from its one core service of web search, so why then dose it develop and maintain a whole suit of product that generate relatively little revenue. One theory is that Google knows that in a rapidly evolving market it needs to be where the next great thing is going to happen, whether it is in social media or video sharing, by creating this diversity, by continuing to invest resources gained from exploiting its core service into exploring and generate variety it is able to better evolve and ensure its sustainability. Because markets change, because the climates changes because everything changes to design sustainable systems is to design systems that build change and evolution into their structure. To better understand this process of evolution lets break it down to see how it works. There are just a hand full of key components, we need be able creation of some variety, allow for adaptation and perform selection to see which of the elements are the most adapt to the particular environment. Innovation - Students of Product Design Episode1
This series 'Students of Product Design' is aimed at anyone interested in the product design process. This first episode looks at innovation, how to innovate and how simply changing the structure of the brief can impact on how innovative you can be. This series won't just talk about stuff, the plan is to share with you as many of the things I have learnt in the last 15 years (or so..) as possible through each stage of the design process to help you become far better designers than I can ever be. I'll be looking at research, sketching, model making, portfolios and a whole load of other things. I often think of youtube as a speed learning tool. Have you ever seen the Matrix films where Neo first learns martial arts by uploading a programme to his head or Trinity learns to fly a helicopter in minutes, that's how I see Youtube, Youtube is our version of the Matrix. So this series which is primarily aimed at students studying industrial design, product design or design engineering in university is designed to do just that, give you a knowledge boost to hopefully make your projects, designs, presentations and portfolio a lot better to improve your chances of getting a position as a designer, or your projects if you want to start your own company, anything related to design. I also hope with the content, that everyone will be able to take something away from it as many of the tips I'll give over the course of this series will be applicable to lots of areas of life. There's just isn't enough out there on product design, compared to say cookery shows it's very under provisioned and so I'm trying to redress the balance. I have a lot more planned, so please be patient, stay tuned and follow me, so that you can be alerted to when the next video is launched. www.producttank.co.uk

Adoniram Sides, Senior Product Manager at Upserve, discusses the product design life-cycle using IDEO and Lean Startup philosophies. Adoniram summarizes the stages of a product design life-cycle as follows: • Develop a ‘How might we?
