Common belief says people who can eat anything they want without gaining weight. They say hardgainers have a “fast metabolism”: they burn everything they eat. Or they don’t digest what they eat. Gaining weight is all about eating more than you’re doing now. If you think you eat a lot, but you don’t. Otherwise you wouldn’t be skinny. Your metabolism & genetics have nothing to do with it. Let’s start with the 8 most common mistakes hardgainers make when trying to gain weight. 1. Lack of Food. Track your daily calorie intake using any app. You’ll see that you’re not eating as much as you think you are. 2. Wrong Food Choices. Foods like salad & spinach are healthy but won’t make you gain weight. You need calorie dense foods like pasta & nuts. 3. Too Much Activity. A very physical job will burn much of the calories you eat. Without massive amounts of food, you’ll never gain weight. 4. Training Wrong. You won’t gain weight doing isolation exercises like Curls. But you will with compound exercises like Squats & Deadlifts. 5. Avoiding Fat Gains. Gaining weight without gaining fat is slow & hard. Usually it leads nowhere. Better: gain weight first, then lose the fat. No Consistency. 6. No Consistency. No approach will work if you miss workouts, neglect to meet your daily caloric needs and change your approach all the time. 7. Limiting Beliefs. You believe you have bad genetics, a fast metabolism and that you’ll always be skinny because everyone else is in your family. 8. No Faith. You’ve given up all hope because everything you tried failed. You believe you’ll be skinny the rest of your life. How to Gain Weight for Hardgainers. Eat more, eat the right foods, train hard, believe you can do it and most of all be consistent. To gain weight: 1. Set Goal Weight. Rule of thumb: 1kg for each cm above 1m. Check this table for example goal weights based on your height. 2. Eat Every 3 Hours. Breakfast, lunch, dinner, post workout and 2 snacks. Prepare your food in advance so you don’t skip meals. 3. Eat +5000 kcal/day. How much calories you need depends upon the individual. But 5000 kcal/day will make most hardgainers gain weight. 4. Track It. Track everything you eat so you have accurate feedback on your daily caloric intake. Eat +5000 kcal each day, no matter what. 5. Get Stronger. Increase your Squat to 1.5x your body-weight for at least 1 rep. With hips going lower than knees. 6. Track Results. Take pictures front/side/back, measure body fat using a fat caliper and weigh yourself every 2 weeks. Keep a training log. 7. Believe. You’re not a hardgainer. You were just not eating enough and eating the wrong foods. You’ll do it right this time. 8. Be Consistent. Eat 5000 kcal every single day and never skip workouts. Persist until you’ve achieved your goal weight. Best Foods to Gain Weight. Calorie dense foods are the best ones for weight gain. Here are some of the best foods your weight gain diet should include: 1. Whole Milk. Rich in proteins, saturated fats & carbs. Whole milk is the best food to gain weight fast. 2. Pasta is easier to eat than rice or oats. Although less healthy, white pasta is even easier to eat. 250G pasta equals 1000 kcal. 3. Mixed Nuts. Can be expensive but 500kcal/100g, lots of protein to build muscle and easy to take with you. Peanut butter also works. 4. Bananas. The only fruit that really works to gain weight is the banana. Comment, like, share this story. For as long as she can remember, Lucie has always been somewhat chubby, and on the short side for her age. And when she was younger she didn't think much of it, and neither did anyone else. It just felt normal, and nobody treated her like a fat girl. But as she got older she noticed that the people she had always been around at school were thinning down and getting taller, maybe losing weight, but mostly just growing up. And she wasn't getting much taller, wasn't thinning down, and ended up feeling just like a short, plump, thirteen year old girl - the fat girl. And then things began to go downhill. Things got so bad, so fast, that it surprised and shocked her to be walking down the street and here people say things about her, call her "fatty" or other names, or give her strange looks. Of course school was where she spent most of her time and that is where the teasing and name calling really got out of hand. She would be called "fat," and "unattractive" right to her face, and this really got to her. She got sad, depressed and low self esteem. Depression too a tole on her. She was having trouble with her weight, and couldn't fit into the clothes she really wanted to be wearing. It also got in the way of the friendships she had had for so long. She felt like she couldn't communicate with her friends honestly and wouldn't let herself do things with them that would put her out there for ridicule and bullying. Like if they asked her to go to a pool party with them she would always reject it and make an excuse not to go. She was too self conscious to put a bathing suit on in front of anyone she knew, especially her classmates. It got to the point where she truly hated her own body. She has stretch marks and so she has changed the way she dresses, always bundling up in big bulky clothes, even in the Summer. And she never goes swimming or to the beach anymore like she used to. Autumn and Winter are her favorite seasons, of course, because it's natural to cover up more and wear larger clothes. It makes her feel safer going out like that, and it's true, she doesn't get called the fat girl as often in those seasons, and not as many weird looks. But no matter what the season, when she's around people at school she still feels weird and uncomfortable - so tired of being the fat girl - they all are wearing skinny jeans and little skirts and t-shirts while she is out and about with baggy leggings or jeans and big long sleeved t's or hoodies. She's hiding inside her clothes really, just to feel a little more comfortable out with kids her own age. She's tried a bunch of diets and weight loss approaches, but it's really hard to stick with them because every time someone calls her the fat girl or some other mean name, she just goes back to the food as a comfort. With exercise too she has had a hard time because she has pretty bad asthma which makes it difficult to breathe and then her frustration, and how tired she is from all the dieting and exercising, she'll just break down, and then that makes her asthma worse, and it just goes around and around. Lucie's mom has been an amazing help and support, and really comforting, and helps her stay and feel strong and positive. But lately it's been harder and harder to stay positive. She kind of hates herself sometimes and is so tired of being the fat girl. Discrimination. It's hard, and the name calling continues and some days are harder than others. BUT, ultimately, Lucie knows that she will lose the weight someday, and she knows that staying positive, and trying hard all the time, will pay off for her. I went to Las Vegas for my sisters bacclorette party and we went to Tao beach last Saturday. They had a contest for sexy girls in bikinis. I was a little bored and needed some excitement so I signed up for the contest. I have 2 daughters(3 years, and the baby 20 months).I was a little nervous becuase I didn't feel as attractive as I did before i had two c-sections for my babies and gained a lot of weight. Also I am still breastfeeding the toddler so I have to eat more to feed her.My body is not the ideal form of beauty on the outside as our culture is based on skinny = beautiful! Which I agree with but I am so pleased with the reaction I got from Tao beach. I am honored that I won because my competition was beautiful. Each and everyone in their own unique way. I hope the world is changeing it's steriotype of beauty. Beauty comes in all shapes and forms inside and out. SO thank you all who voted for me at Tao. First off, what is skinny fat exactly? Those two words “skinny” and “fat” are opposites. How can I be skinny fat and what sort of diabolical black magic is this??? Scientifically, this body composition happens when one has very little muscle mass but a decent amount of body fat. It does not matter the weight of the person as it has more to do with the bad lean muscle tissue to fat ratio. With one’s shirt on it usually just looks like this person is skinny. However, with the shirt off there is a noticeable portion of belly fat. It’s pretty much having the body shape of an Avocado. The goal, is to flip the Avocado over Having a thinner waist compared to shoulder or bust width, it what humans are designed to look like and be attracted to. So how do we fix this? First let’s look at the reasons why exactly people end up skinny fat. It’s usually a poor diet combined with little to no strength training. The truth is that you could be doing a lot of the “right” things and still wind up skinny fat. For instance, lots of skinny fat people try to fix the problem with long distance cardio. While long distance cardio is great for the heart, it really does nothing for you in the way of body composition and only makes you smaller as a whole. Being smaller really doesn’t do much to help flip that Avocado over. So how do we fix skinny fat?? People who are skinny fat are often presented with two pretty bad options. #1 Cutting If you focus only on cutting weight, you may lose that pesky belly fat but will also lose any reaming muscle in the process making you look even skinnier. Looking like a skelton was never very sexy and that’s coming from a stick figure. #2. Bulking If you focus on gaining weight and muscle, you will increase muscle mass but it’s likely you’ll increase belly fat as well. Since I presume the marshmallow man look isn’t your thing either, I wouldn’t recommend this. The real skinny fat solution is something call body re-composition. It’s where you both gain muscle while attempting to lose fat simultaneously. The great news is there’s really only 3 steps you need to make this happen. 1. Get Stronger In order to build up that Avocado, you need to add some lean muscle tissue to your frame. The best way to do this is with resistance training. Now, don’t just run around the gym lifting weights for just the sake of lifting weights. That won’t lead you to results. The real key is to get stronger. Week by week you will want to increase the amount of weight you’re lifting or reps you’re doing to get the body STRONG. This strength will lead to muscle growth and that muscle growth helps to build up that avocado’s upper portion. 2. Maintain Weight The next step may sound strange, but you should focus on maintaining not losing your current weight. As your strength increases from resistance training, the amount of muscle tissue you have will increase as well. If week by week you are getting stronger, yet you’re staying at the same weight that usually means you’re adding lean muscle tissue and dropping body fat at the same time. Some weeks you will need to eat a little less, some weeks a little more (eating whole and natural foods of course), but if your current weight stays same you WILL start to see skinny fat body change. Slowly but surly, that Avocado will start to transform. 3. Have Patience Fixing being skinny fat is going to take some time and patience. Rome wasn’t built in a day and neither is a sexy upside down Avocado body. It may take 12 weeks to get to your goals, but by the end of the journey you should look and feel like a new person.
